About
fifty years ago Julian Huxley (Born: June 22, 1887 Julian Sorell Huxley was a
British evolutionary biologist, eugenicist, and internationalist. He was a
proponent of natural selection, and a leading figure in the mid-twentieth
century modern evolutionary synthesis) pointed out that the determinants of
future human evolution may not be physical, as in the case of animals, but
psycho-social. In the case of animals ‘struggle for existence’ provides the evolutionary
motivational force, whereas in the case of humans ‘struggle for consciousnesses
seems to power evolutionary progression.
By
‘struggle for consciousness’ it is meant the struggle to transcend the
limitations of body and mind and attain higher levels of consciousness.
Although humanity has been engaged in this struggle for more than three
millennia, it seems to be entering a definitive phase in recent years.
Humanity
is now entering a new phase of transformation of consciousness. Like the
groundswell of an ocean, a collective awakening of humanity is now spreading in
many parts of the free world. The signs of awakening can be seen
a a)
In
the coming into existence of hundreds of spiritual movements and communities
all over the free world and
b)
In
the outlook on life of the present generation of young men and women. The
electronic revolution, the internet and globalization are creating a new,
media-savvy generation all over the world. These young people have the courage to
go beyond barriers and do not want to be imprisoned by institutional religions.
They are creating a new culture, the cyber culture.
The
‘Counter-culture’ of the 60th was the creation of hippies, dropouts
and disillusioned intellectuals who rejected science, technology and values. By
contrast the present ‘Cyber culture’ is created by promising young men and
women who want to celebrate life. They want to make use of science and
technology to attain higher levels of knowledge, joy and fulfillment. They take
ideas and principles from all religions, all cultures, and all teachers all
over the world. The new cyber culture knows no frontiers, no barriers, and no
division. It is universal and global. It is bringing about the collective
transformation of human consciousness.
What
he present generation of awakening minds needs is an experientially validated
practical philosophy which is based on the eternal truth and laws of the
spiritual world interpreted in the context of modern thought, which harmonizes
all spiritual traditions, which inspires young people to tread the path of
virtue and service, which makes every act the manifestation of the Divinity of
the Soul and which unifies all human beings in a bond of universal love.
The
emerging generation may well embrace a spiritual path which leans toward the
transcendence of higher levels of consciousness. By doing so, they will learn
to know more of the universe and their connection to it.
