When thinking about spirituality, people often
wonder where to start, even though there is lots of literature available,
finding one’s way through the maze can be quite taunting.
We also need to realize, that people don’t come
right out and speak about spiritual matters. They may ask questions such as:
what is truth, what is life all about, what is my place in society, how do I
fit in, do I want to fit in, what is my role in life, where does one start
When people ask us for our opinion on the subject,
it is prudent for us to engage in a non threatening dialogue.
A gentle way to start is at the level of the heart.
We can start with love by asking how a person what he thinks about it. Hi
opinion on love of one-self, what it meant by it, love of one’s family and one’s
neighbor.
This introspective approach can be quite challenging
for people, who are not normally engaged in self-inquiry.
In the discussion it is wise not to talk about
labels or God unless a person wants to know. We may rather focus on truth, or
values, this will gradually lead to the inevitability that there is such a
thing as cosmic consciousness and that we are all a part of it.
Whether Christian or Hindu, we realize that these
labels separate us. We have to get over the idea of separateness and realize
that everything is a manifestation of God.
We can talk about anything that is uplifting to the
heart; such as high ideals, beauty and love and watch how this elevates the
mood. We will notice that we feel more joy, more freedom, and more energy.
Conversely when we think of negativity, anger,
greed, lust, and jealousy we equally experience how it depletes our energy.
How do we know that we are on the right path? We
know when we experience an expanding, uplifting kind of inner freedom, love and
joy.
