When in ignorance we believe that we are controlled
by our senses. The senses are of a lower nature then prakriti or
material nature and are influenced by the three gunas.
The ones who are in ignorance are dominated by the
senses assuming that they are the doer and cause of their actions and thus are stricken
with the false ego. They perform all actions with desires and attachment.
The person of wisdom recognizes that all actions are
but the result of the interaction of the three gunas and material nature and thus
remain free of desires and attachment and performs all actions as a matter of
duty.
The scriptural authority of the Vedas states that the
Atman or soul is the doer but this is fully experienced only when moksha or
liberation from material existence is attained.
The impressions of the Atman or Self filter through
the medium of the physical body in proportion to the purity of the mind. Also In
the Brahma Sutra we read that the Atman is the doer. Yet when the knowledge of
a person is limited, the filtering process is slight and he perceives his physical
body as the doer of all actions, when in actuality all actions are performed by
the interaction of material nature, the three gunas and the false ego.
Because of this, the ignorant whose minds are
bewildered by the false ego, believe that they are their bodies and that they
are the doer of their actions.
